Are Chatime Drinks Halal?

<data:blog.pageName/> <data:blog.title/> <data:blog.pageTitle/>

Due to the increasing popularity of pearl milk bubble tea here in Malaysia, its kinda hard for people to miss anyone not having a cup of this drink it their hands. With the increasing number of outlets actually serving these drinks, its kinda hard for one to differentiate which is the better brand than the rest.

However, one actually does stand out than the rest, not only just via its popularity among the people but also in quality in taste would be the Chatime outlets that are rapidly increasing its number of stalls across Malaysia. Originating from Taiwan, these drinks does have a significantly more milkier taste than the rest. Personally I was never a fan of pearl milk tea to begin with but due to the availability (as well as some staff mates of mine at work) I have to admit that I am now a huge fan of the product.

[The drink that everyone is crazy about!]

However, the one question that has been bugging my mind as well as many around me is this:

Are the products in Chatime halal to begin with?

Out of sheer logic, one would argue that almost all of the products made in this shop are vegetarian based however there have been issues when it comes to gelatin based products made out of lard (pork fat) on some products. Furthermore, each of its outlets have not shown any halal logos on their signs as well.

So I decided to find out from the main source itself as well as the governing body that handles the "halal" recognition for the product! After contacting Mr. Bryan Loo, Chief Executive Officer / Managing Director of Chatime Malaysia himself and he can confirm one thing.

Chatime Drinks in Malaysia are Halal!

He mentioned in a short interview with myself that Chatime has always had an international halal recognition certificate approved even before coming to Malaysia to begin with. The only reason that they can't get the logo up on their shops is because that in order for a shop to have the logo shown on their shops, it is a requirement by law to have 2 Muslim local workers registered as workers at each outlets at all times.

I contacted Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM) and sure enough, they agreed to what has been said by Mr. Bryan however it does not mean that the international halal certification are not recognized at all.

Perhaps one of the reasons why Muslim customers are less inclined in purchasing the product of this shop is because that there are no visible signs of any halal certification and also it is an unfortunate norm that we Muslims are less inclined to go for restaurants with Chinese writing on it. With this, perhaps the misconception can be changed as it is quite a nice drink to try out every now and then, especially during a hot day!

Coming from a Muslim who is completely hooked on the pearl milk tea they have in Chatime, I would honestly implore you lot to try out their drinks there, especially my fellow Muslim readers out there. Who knows, you might as much be hooked into it as I would! :D

UPDATE: I have done some interview on the halal status of the popular brand Snowflake! Click here for report!

NOTE:

It has come to my attention that there are a few parties that are not satisfied with my writing on this article. As I mentioned earlier, this is done from merely my own research and findings. I encourage those who are not happy with it to pursue more on their own research to find out more

We Muslims come from a line of educated, scholastic people who will continue to read and learn for knowledge, not a bunch of hiding cowards whose only interest are too scream and shout nonsensically like wild animals.

Similarly to the non-Muslim comments that are here to just generate hate, this is not a breeding ground for bigots who hate anything that are different from them. Society deems us to understand the differences of one another, not taking it as a reason to hate.

So in short if there is anything in this article that you find unsatisfactory, please take the effort and  make your own research rather than scream hate out of assumptions and selective reading.

I will be monitoring the comments here and decide should there be a need for the comment to continue in this post.

Thank you.

  18. Well if Muslims drinks it or don't drink chatine gives no 2 f*** care. They already have other races flocking their outlets. Also they don't care abt putting the halal sign up as it will ruin their reputation. If you Muslims are so particular then dont drink chatime.

Go to clubs n see how many muslims are drinking even during fasting month. Stop being fanatics and hypocrites.

    1. How can a simple halal sign jeopardise their business in any way? A non-halal sign will keep quite a few Muslims from entering their shop, but I don't think non-Muslims are bothered if something is halal or otherwise. So really, a halal sign would bring in more customers by sheer logic alone. More prospective customers = more money.

  19. have been worked with chinese few years ago.as pembuat air.di satu kedai ni.actually they have a factory, they make vegetarian foods and have the halal certificate.but unfortunately, not their shops/restaurants.sebab?sebab there is no single malay yang kerja dekat restaurant/shop diorg.i have experiencing la kerja with them and nothing suspicious since i have seen them cooking and prepare the drinks by my own eyes.makanan tu tak seberapa la since chinese yg masak, tapi air tu (they make bubble tea) and all of them sy pernah buat even masak sendiri bubble tu.bubble tu mmg dari taiwan but got halal certificate and mmg benda tu tapioca.even my mom yg makan bubble tu pun says it is a tapioca (elders dh mkn garam byk dari kita is it?) so sy pun no doubt minum sbb sy yakin.the chinese also sgt pentingkan kebersihan.tapi semua tu ikut orang.yg penting selidik dan yakin.then its okay:)

  20. The product is halal but the person conducted preparing the drinks have too wear a glove.its priority for someone who is handling a FnB industry.

  22. I don't think putting a halal sign will ruin the reputation of a company.since the majority of malaysians are muslim.look at all big company as kfc and pizza hut. and please bare this,we muslims need only halal food to eat.there are lack of halal food in this modern days so we need to do research a lot.

please don't be stereotypes.not all muslim like that.if we did wrong, blame on us not on our religion.man, your comments are racist.we need more intelligent people here.lol
